O ministro da Cultura, Manuel Veiga, escolheu o dia internacional da Língua Materna, quarta-feira, 21 de Fevereiro, para apelar de Mindelo, aos grupos políticos com assento parlamentar e aos responsáveis de partidos políticos, para a necessidade de alcançarem o consenso à volta do reconhecimento jurídico-constitucional da língua cabo-verdiana como língua oficial em Cabo Verde.
Para Manuel Veiga este é o patamar que a língua cabo-verdiana necessita conquistar, pois pode ser utilizada na administração desde que haja assento constitucional, passando, no caso de Cabo Verde, a ser utilizado tanto o português como o crioulo.

O titular da pasta da Cultura, não deixou de notar os avanços conseguidos a nível da utilização da língua cabo-verdiana, apontando algumas instituições em países como Estados Unidos da América, Alemanha e Portugal onde já estão a introduzir a língua cabo-verdiana no ensino, não esquecendo também a sua utilização na Internet e alguns estudos sobre o crioulo.

No mês de Maio, em Bóston (EUA), assinala-se o aniversário da introdução da língua cabo-verdiana numa das universidades da região de Nova Inglaterra e Manuel Veiga deverá marcar presença naquele evento, em representação nacional.

I agrree to officialize criolo, only if the official criolo, is the criolo from sao-vicente. this will be a very good compromise.

AND SPOKEN IN GUINEA BISSAU IS WHAT I UNDERSTAND. iT IS MORE INDEPTH

THAT CREOLU IS WHAT I UNDERSTOOD MUCH BETTER THEN THE KRIOLU SPOKEN IN ST.VINCENT.

NOW SOME PEOPLE WILL SAY THAT THE CREOLU THAT I SPEAK IS THAT OF THE UNEDUCATED PEOPLE. WHEN THAT IS SAID WHAT THEY ARE SAYING IS IF YOU SPEAK THE CREOLU WHICH IS MORE CLOSE TO PORTUGAL THEN YOU ARE CIVILIZED BUT THE KREOLU OF GUINEA IS OF THE BUSH PEOPLE OR SAVAGES.

I DO THINK THAT WE NEED TO STUDY THE IDEA OF CHANGING FROM MAKING THE LANGUAGE OF PORTUGAL OR FRANCE OR ENGLISH.
BECAUSE WHAT I THINK IS THAT IN OUR STRUGGLE FOR UNITY THOSE LANGUAGES CUT ACROSS TRIBAL LANGUAGES AND GIVES ANOTHER DIMENSION IN OUR UNITY. UNLESS SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE THERE IS A SPECIAL AFRICAN LANGUAGE FOR ALL AFRICA. I AM NOT SURE THAT CAN HAPPEN,BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY CULTURES AND SO MANY DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS ON THE CONTINENT.
I THINK IT IS BEST FOR THOSE WHO LIVE IN CABO VERDE TO MAKE THIS DECISION. THAT IS MY ONLY THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT.

the criolo from fogo or santiago, is not closer to african languages. the vocabulary of all the capeverdean criolos is based on portuguese words at more than 90%, the gramary of the criolo can be more african, but unfortunatly I don't have any background to judge on that point as I don't speak any african language.

The reason why the criolo from sao-vicente should be the official criolo, is more from a compromise. Why? because the people from sao-vicente prefer to keep the portuguese as the official language, it is the people from santiago who want to officialize criolo, it is their own initiative. As it is their initiative they should compromise and accept the criolo of sao-vicente as the official criolo, just as a compromise. this would show their true interest on the officialization of criolo as a language.
