"SELECTWOMAN BRENDA ECKSTROM SOUGHT TO AMEND A PROPOSAL

"I BELIEVE THE ORIGNAL INTENT FOR PRESERVING THE BUILDING SOME HOW GOT LOST IN BUREAUCRACY," MRS ECKSTROM SAID.
ACCORDING TO THE REPORTER BRIAN BOYD OF THE STANDARD TIMES STAFF.
SELECTWOMAN MRS ECKSTROM SAID.THE SCHOOL OPENED IN 1913 AND PRIMARILY SERVED CAPEVERDEANS. THE SCHOOL CLOSED IN THE EARLY 1950s,AND HAS BEEN VACANT SINCE THE 1960s.
JOAN ANDREWS A RESIDENT OF CAPE VERDEAN DESCENT,SAID THE IDEA OF A CENTER REMAINS ALIVE. SHE SAID THAT THE CAPEVERDEAN
COMMUNITY WAS SQUEEZED OUT OF THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT,"BUT AS SHE SAID IT IS NOT OVER YET."
FROM: THE STANDARD-TIMES WED. OCTOBER 25,2006 PAGE A7.
MY VIEW:
WE HOPE THAT ALL CABOVERDIANOS WILL SEE THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A CABO VERDE CULTURAL CENTER IN ONSET WHICH COULD SERVE AS A MODEL PROJECT FOR ALL CV CULTURAL CENTERS.
ONSET IS A CENTER TO ALL THE SURROUNDINGS CV COMMUNITIES.
IN THE HEART OF THE CRANBERRY COMMUINITY WHICH IS THE INDUSTRY THAT WAS BUILT BY CABOVERDEAN LABOR.
THIS CENTER WOULD MAKE A GREAT ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION TO THE TOWN OF ONSET AND BE A LIGHT HOUSE OF ENLIGHTENMENT.
ONSET LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE
THIS WOULD BE A GREAT GIFT TO THE THE PEOPLE OF CABOVERDE FRON DECAS & MAKEPEACE OCEAN SPRAY INC.
A WONDERFUL GIFT TO ALL WHO DRINK CRANBERRY JUICE.
POVO CABOVERDIANO NU JUNTA MON.
NO PINTCHA!!
THANK YOU.

Thank you, Manu Salah Matteos,
for being on top of the news that refer to the capeverdean community on the South Shore. Capeverdean Cultural Center is the right thing for the right time. We want capeverdeans to support this very needed Space to the CVerdean community( GO and VOTE when you can) Investigate what is going on on your community to know who supports what and know which direction you will vote. A CVCC will be a space that will be used with the sole purpose to revive our culture, to celebrate our existence as a ethnic community, express ourselves, and let others know about it.
Thank you again Manu for being our advocate in the South Shore.

In fact a cultural center is one of the things we need to strengthen not only our cultural but also our network, connections and ultimately our community development. There is a great need of physical infrastructure like this in the Cape Verdean community in cities like Boston, Brockton, New Bedford and Pawtucket. Sometimes I fell jealous in a positive way when I drive by the Haitian Multi-Service Community Center in the heart of the Cape Verdean hub in Columbia Road, Dorchester, and ask: "why don't we have something like that too?"
I'm very proud of the Haitian Community because they get together, support each other and get things done: a state-of-the-art Community Center, 2 or more Representatives in the State House (Rep. Marie St. Fluer and Linda Dorcena), many successful people in high profile government jobs and many initiatives going on. We came here before them but they have surpassed us by far. Maybe we should look into their model and strategies for community empowerment, analyze what makes them successful and adopt and adapt them in our circles.
I hope this community center is a first step and that there will be more like this in the Dorchester, Brockton and other CV strongholds. |

why cant we have something like this in our community here in dorchester?, why cant the city do something like this for our brothers who are killing each other over nonsense. it is funny to me, because all the city is talking about is putting more police officers out there. the police officers are not going to resulve the violence in our community, because it has been proven that police officers don't protect people. we don't need police officers in our streets, we need more resources, and we need more things for our brothers to do. We need our leaders to get out there and start talking to those who need help, instead of sitting in their office and not doing anything. We need to see them doing something in the streets.
I'm a graduate Student at American International College, and for the past few months I've been trying to put together this club called "A LUTA CONTINUA" CONTRA VIOLENCIA. What I'm trying to do is calling out my College Brothers and Sisters to join force and fight violence in our Community. Right now i have few people who are willing to join the club, but we need more people to join the club, and we need more ideas and insights. I'm working on this article about violence and i sent NOS Jornal an email, telling them what i'm trying to do, and they havent returned my email. To me it seems that some people just dont care about whats going on in their community but i'm doing all i can to help my community and i encourage you to do the same, our community needs help and our community needs leaders.
If you want to join "A LUTA CONTINUA" CONTRA VIOLENCIA or share your opinion, ideas feel free to contact me at 'mateusjb@gmail.com', and i would love to talk to our community leaders. We need to join force and fight together.
lets go Criolos, Lets make our Community a better place for our brothers and sisters, lets do what Cabral would want us to do. we cannot wait for the City to help us anymore, we need to act now.
thank you very much, God Bless you and God bless our community.
Proud Criolo.
