For those of you who weren't able to make it to the D.A. David Soares recognition dinner, allow me to assure you all that it was a big success.

David was honored and the guests were inspired by David's awesome speech, but more importantly, the guests, Cape Verdeans and friends of Cape Verdeans-alike, got the opportunity to meet and give their accolades to a truly promising and honorable son of Cabo Verde. I, myself, as an organizer, and a true believer in David Soares' capacity, which dare I say is limitless, was honored to have met David after two years of promulgating his story. Thank you David. Also I would like to thank my fellow organizers, Adriano, Alberto and Dave. You guys are awesome.

All in all, though, I, and the aforementioned organizers, would like to specifically thank everyone who responded to our invitation and each and every one of the forum contributors who made it to the dinner. After all, the very idea of the event came forth in this forum. On that note, thank you all again.

We look forward to seeing you all again in our next event which we'll announce soon.

Thank you!

I would like to see us Capeverdeans united and presenting a positive image of us and our culture. We need to get involve in politics by voting for candidates that suports our causes. We have large number of citizens thruought the New England states, and yet we do not have the recognition that we should have, partially because we don't get involve. We have educate and capable individuals in our communities that with support, can advance our causes and moved us forward and gives us a voice. We have made history recently by getting one of our own elected as the district attorney of Albany, New York, a place where possibly no Capeverdeans live. Not just that he made history for us Capevrdeans, but for minority individuals in general. Thats an honor !!!

Please, I urge all of you my fellow Capeverdeans, register to vote and participate in the process to help advance our causes and expose our rich culture. Let us be known with positve image and not by the front page article in the Boston Globe exposing our young generation as being crime elements in the communities of Boston, Brockton, Pawtucket, etc.

The dinner was an event fabulous. Definitely, one of the best event organized this year in the community.

The speakers were great, the food was delicious and the whole audience presented a real classic atmosphere to the ocassion. It was something that make us proud of.

Well done forcv & friends of David. Laughing

A true example of how the capeverdian community should come together to support one of their own, and to achieve a common goal.

Thanks to all that gave their contribution to this great cause. David Soares is a role model and a symbol of humbleness in our community. He is an icon that everyone should try to emulate.

Thanks David for making us proud. You're not alone in your struggle, for God is by your side. If God is with you, who else can be against you?

The event was fantantic and well organized.
A lady who attended the event walk to me yesterday and said: " I was proud to see a lot of Cape Verdean men well dress-up in suits and stepping up as shiny role models for the youth in the community." These words just made up my day that have been a little stressful.

However, for people continue to organizing more events and initiatives like this, the Cape Verdean community HAS to step up. We had a great turn out but for an event of this nature the community is expected to come out in mass and support. It's not every day that a CV becomes D.A. in a city in America specially outside his community.

As Joseph Fortes, a former city councilor in New Bedford, stated on his speech, the Cape Verdean community needs to follow the example of the Irish, Italian and Hatian people and do 2 things:

- come out in mass and partecipate on events of this nature

- put their hands deep in their hands into their pockets and support events like these financially

Everything in America cost money; and specifically, an event of this nature is very costly. For 26 days we heavily ask for the support of community not only on partecipating but also on sponsoring the event, specially the Cape Verdean businesses. We had lots of promisses and phone calls, but no one took the extra step to sign the check and send the money. It's disheartening that the organizers, in addition to all the time and energy they devoted in planning this event, had to put their own money to cover the rest of the cost. This is not the message that community wants to send out to people that want to improve it.

In fact, this is a community that cries for leaders and role models. However, here you have a bunch of CV men that devote their time to do positive things for their people and the latter in general doesn't fufill its part. Our lack or support for our own people and the apathetic attitude that reigns among many of us are really hurting us as people, community and individuals.

Therefore, my fellow Cape Verdeans, we need to change our attitude as people and community if we want to succeed in America. Yes we need to come together strongly "pa nu fika mas unidu."
Thank you

The Irish,Italians,Haitians...have built a strong reputation and political clout in this country through their hard work and solidarity among themselves.

Though its mostly subtle, there's a bitter distrust among the islanders hailing from different islands - and that's what keeps the cape verdean community in this country from solidify their influence - in american politics, economy and society.

Many of those(Cape Verdean Clowns) who discriminate, betray and hate their fellow cape verdeans based on their island origin ,regard their act as trifle and with no long-term damage, and they couldn't be more wrong.

There's deep and sad bigotry in cape verdean communities throughout the world not because of our almost non-existent cultural difference but,our different dialects which - is stupid and regrettable.

Our economic and sociopolitical influence in this country, are already overdue -but its never too late for anything.

The websites such as; FORCV.COM,PRAIACAPITAL.COM,CABOVERDEONLINE.COM,KENTURA.COM
...
are the driving force in the cape verdean community in the "States" through their online information and solidarity among cape verdeans on and offline.

Keep up the good work,my fellow compatriots !

By Alcides Vicente, FORCV contributor

As Cape Verdeans we constantly seek inspiration, but seldom do we recognize it when it comes to honoring fellow Cape Verdeans that have inspired us to feel proud to be Cape Verdean.

On Saturday night in Pawtucket members of FORCV.com and Friends of David Soares were instrumental in providing an inspirational gathering to honor District Attorney David Soares of Albany, New York.

As invited dignitaries took the stage to speak about Mr. Soares, the crowd of about 150 patrons began to enthusiastically cheer for the messages of positive inspiration.

The highlight may have come from former gang member from Dorchester, Mario Rodrigues when he personally apologized "to our elders, our mothers and fathers and our community for embarrassing you by our actions that has caused Cape Verdeans to have a bad name". Mario told the audience that he met Mr. Soares at Harvard University at a conference on community crime and how proud he was to have a fellow Cape Verdean that had reach such a high level of success in the criminal justice system.

Another inspiring story was told by 13 year old John Gonçalves of Pawtucket who said he heard Mr. Soares speak at this year's Shea High School graduation and said, "I felt good seeing another Cape Verdean up there and I feel that I can become successful someday as well."

Further inspiration came from 89 year old George Lima who was the first State Representative of Cape Verdean descent who presented Mr. Soares with two citations from the Rhode Island legislature. Mr. Lima was also recognized as one of the original Tuskegee Airmen who were the first black pilots to fight in World War II.

"The story of David Soares is built on a road that has been traveled for many years in America," said Alcides Vicente, who introduced Mr. Soares. "We can look to the story of Horace Silva who played with Count Basie Band and others, to Sweet Daddy Grace who came from Brava at 14 years old and when he died in 1960 had more than 100 churches throughout America; had 4 mansions from Los Angeles to New Jersey and died with 6 million dollars in the bank. Or how about Davy Lopes from East Providence who played in the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Managed the Milwaukee Brewers, Vicente said. "The story of David Soares is special to us because David is one of us, an immigrant from Brava, a young Man who is humble and proud to be Cape Verdean."

Vicente then went on to introduce Lidia Soares,David's Mother and sisters Benvinda Timas and Madalena Soares and he stressed that, "though Lidia and Lucas Soares were not able to get a formal education, they made sure 4 of their children all have college degrees.

Organizers, Miguel Viera, Alberto Pina, Adriano Cabral and David Barros spoke of their need to recognize Mr. Soares and the importance of the community to promote successful Cape Verdeans to offset some of the negative stories that often gets publicized in the newspapers throughout New England when something goes
wrong.

Mr. Soares gave a heart warming speech that was in both Creole and English and translated at times by his Sister Benvinda. He spoke of his personal inspiration from Thurgood Marshall, who headed the NAACP and became the first person of color to become a Supreme Court Justice. He spoke of the need of the criminal
justice system to be more involved in preventive rather than just prosecuting crime. He spoke of his childhood and the struggles his parents went through. "Some think that what I went through to become the DA was hard, but let me tell you it does not compare to what my Mother and Father went through coming to a new
land, not speaking the language, raising 5 kids, getting up every morning to work in the mills and then having to work more after'" said Soares.

The gala event ended with great music and singing by Candida Rose and an appearance by Gardenia. Justin Fernandes hosted the night and the food was catered by Daniel Gomes of Galito Restaurant.

Oi Krioulinha,

Bom Fim de Semana Very Happy

Kriolinha,

no dia 17 de Agosto o seguinte convite derigido especificamente a mulheres caboverdianas foi colocado a publico neste forum debaixo do tema DA David Soares Gala Dinner que podes ver aqui: 'http://forcv.forumup.org/viewtopic.php?t=509&mforum=forcv':
Quote:

Alberto Pina, Boston: 617-519-8273

Quote:
English: Hi. The organizing committee of David Soares Gala Reception Dinner scheduled for August 26 would like to invite you as a woman to be part of the organizing committee of this event on August 26. If you are interested, please call one of the members below:

See, as was the case with David Soares' dinner, I would think that you don't doubt that, we, the contributors/participants of this forum, can make events happen. I doubt more than 10 people in the Cape Verdean Rhode Island community knew about David Soares' phenomenal success prior to David's story being published on this Forum. Now, lo and behold, thousands of people know about David's inspiring story. The same can happen to these inspiring Cape Verdean women you mentioned. You just have to name them and let us know where they work and I will personally contact them and suggest we have a recognition dinner for them. See, it's that easy - all thanks to the people's forum here are FORCV.com

It can happen!

Rolling Eyes Hi my Brothers, it was very nice chating with you, I found your forum very interesting, but it seems to me you don't take creticism very well and you are quick to judge. Look what you wrote sapo " DA PROXIMA VEZ ACONSELHA A SER MAIS CAUTELOSA ANTES DE TIRAR PEDRAS 'A TOA QUE PODE ATINGIR ALGUEM DE BOM SENSO OS ELEMENTOS DESSA ORGANIZACAO'. krioulinha, Thanks for your sugestion and I am really sorry if you understood my statement as threat. Never such an evil thought ocurred to my mind. My real intention was to call your attention, before making such strong statements as you did, to pause and make several ??? about the fact you didn't see any woman among us as organizers of the event. It was so obvious that something else was wrong. As a man of integrity I totally agree with you that it would be a BIG mistake if all of us completely forgot to include our ladies in the organization. It was a shame that those ladies we invited to participate as members of the organization decided not to. (of course I am not including the honorable ones like the CV general consule, etc.etc.)... I myself was very ambarassed by that fact that we avoided making any comments about it in order to avoid any offense possible. You see, we're being very cautious and very respectful towards our ladies instead of slashing them (those we invited) for not participating, because everyone would look bad...

I believe we all are open to all sort of criticism. Either constructive or not, but a more constructive one would be asking the organizers the reason WHY some woman were not included in the organization. May be your criticism would be more reasonable if you questioned why we didn't extend our invitation to those that were more likely to participate. I admit this shortfall, but since we don't have all the contacts, please give us some slack. Will you?
That's why we advertise it in the forcv website, on radio, on Cabo Video for 2 weeks before the event. May be we didn't do enough... but at least we tried...

I hope next time you can join us and motivate some other ladies to do the same. Together we can be much, much stronger...
One final thing...don't be ofended by my sense of humor that I may sound ironic sometimes...with the best of intentions I just try to be funny, which I am NOT...if you know me... Laughing

We are planing some other events in the near future and I think you'll be a great asset to our community. I am sure we'll make a big difference if we bring our talent together.
Please join us. We need you!

Um abracao and we thank you for being honest and real.

Hey Mister,
