"In what's being considered one of the most significant opinions on the issue of race in schools since Brown v. Board of Education more than a half-century ago, U.S. Supreme Court justices threw out integration programs in Seattle, Wash., and Jefferson County, Ky., that sometimes considered race when assigning students to campuses." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

"WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court yesterday struck down assignment plans that place students by race to ensure that each public school has diverse classes, marking a major shift in discrimination law.

The decision could make hundreds of school-assignment plans across the country, including roughly 20 in Massachusetts, subject to legal challenges. The Supreme Court's decision was the latest in a string of 5-to-4 victories for conservatives ..."

The court, in the final decision of its term, ruled that desegregation plans in Seattle and Louisville discriminated against white students who had been prevented from attending the school of their choice, even though slots were available for minority students. - The Boston Globe

What do you think about this decision? What's the future of diversity in US public schools? Will this help close the Achievement among white, black, latino, and immigrant students across the United States?

Is this a green light for schools to be segregated again? Are we going back to the dark years of the historic "separate but (un)equal" schools?

One of my concern here is how this decision will affect Metco Program.

Many minorities students including several Cape Verdeans are enrolled in this program, which seen to be a positive expirience for that from what I hear out there. So, I guess it would be unfortunate to see it vanishing.

FYI:

"Metco is a grant program funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is a voluntary program intended to expand educational opportunities and reduce racial imbalance, by permitting students in certain cities to attend public schools in other communities that have agreed to participate.

The Program has been in existence since 1966 and was originally funded through a grant by the Carnegie Foundation and United States Office of Education. In that year the first Metco legislation was filed, the service provider METCO Inc. was established, and seven school districts began accepting the first two hundred Metco students. Currently, there are about 3,300 students participating in 34 school districts in metropolitan Boston and at four school districts outside Springfield." (http://www.doe.mass.edu/metco/)
