By Alberto Pina FORCV President, Editor, and Webmaster
Para Português, vai para o fim desta página.
English: In a little over a month, World Music, a Cambridge based non-profit organization that has been presenting "the finest traditional and contemporary performing arts from around the world to the broadest possible audience"(worldmusic.org/about_aboutus.php), brought to USA two of the most brilliant stars of CapeVerdean music: Lura and Sara Tavares.
In fact, the two are nominees for FORCV Best Cape Verdean Artist of 2006 poll, which has been highly competitive since its launching 5 days ago. They both gave outstanding performances that left the crowd on their feet dancing in the packed auditorium of Berklee Center for the Performing Arts in Boston.
Nevertheless, while watching Sara's performance last night, I couldn't resist the temptation to address what's been a hot topic in Cape Verdean bars and social venues in New England: Sara vs. Lura?! Indeed, I found my mind constantly wandering and comparing the two ( my apologies, Sara ): their presence on stage, the building up of the rapport with their audience, the type of crowd they each attract, the depth of their voices, the content of their lyrics, the way the tone of their voice and dance moves express their partial Portuguese origin and “Kaboverdianidadi”,, their friendliness, their talent and skills, and most importantly the Cape Verdean warmth emerging from the depth of their hearts. Maybe that's because last night was a real New England one: 'wicked' freezing!
At the end of my 3 hour comparative analysis, I still couldn't reach a conclusion: Sara versus Lura?! I’m still uneasy with the direction my confused and unsettled mind is inclining toward. This question woke me up this morning as I found myself comparing the artistic talents of the two stars again in my dreams. But As I was close to reach a conclusion, a damn noisy truck drove by my busy and lovely street and I woke up. However, as an attempt to recover my train of thoughts, I decided to rush downstairs, while on my pajamas, brew some coffee to unfreeze my brain from last night’s cold, and starting writing this article to ask for your help in figuring out this question before it fades away: Sara or Lura:?:
Please, write your take on this.

I like Lura probably because I have listened to her music much longer. I also like her album because she is redoing some Bulimundo songs such as To Martins and N Bem De Fora. Sara is excellent as well and her show was good especially with Boy Ge there. It is a tough call.
Keep up the good work Alberto! You are doing very positive work for the community and should be applauded. You are a role model. |

Thank you for these kind words. Often appreciation like this helps me reboot from the demands and stress that this type of work put on me. |

OF GREATNESS FOR BOTH.

I like both Sara and Lura's talents as artists. But business wise, Lura's management seems to be friendlier to the fans than Sara's.
I met Jo Da Silva, Lura's manager, once: A very nice and pleasant guy, willing to talk to the fans and share ideas. But, nothing personal, Sara's manager (The lady behind Sara Tavares on the picture below), whom I've seen 3 times, never had a smile in her face. I'm yet to find out what color her teeth is. Really, each time I saw her, she seems always pissed off and angry at the world. Also she never talked to the fans and always demanded people to stay away from Sara.
A showbiz manager of a famous artist like Sara should have excellent people's skills. You gotta be nice to the fans; otherwise their will run away at some point. I hope Sara takes this as a positive criticism and has a little chat with her about her attitude towards the general public because I can see that hurting her carrier on the long run. For example, I myself, as much as I like Sara, I'm not willing to pay $40 or more for her show and then get an attitude from her manager.

St_antao, I'm having the feeling that you have some issues in dealing with your own identity and your need to be accepted as European that you might want to solve first. Then you can start to see the world with different glasses other than the race one you seem to always wear. |

St_antao, both Sara and Lura are watered-down CV singers. What does that mean in terms of creativity to you? |

they are portuguese citizens who are born in portugal, and this is the main component on their identity. They are ethnically capeverdean but in terms of identity they are from portugal, just as much as a cv born and bred in the usa is different from a capeverdean born and has an american culture.
By the way, I have been surprised by the style of lura who is very different from capeverdean artist as she has something typically european in her style, the only reason why I classify her music as capeverdean musician, it is because she sings in creole. |

How European is Lura's funana and batuku? For example, the funana M' bem di fora?
Dude, you definitely have some serious issues with you. |

S' Antao.
My Brother, dont compare Cape Verdeans born in Portugal with those born here. We all know how Our fellow Brothers and sisters are treated in that country. If they were interested in Portuguese culture, or music, they would explore Portuguese style not Cape Verdean's style or sing in portuguese instead of CREOLO. My brother Lura's and Sara's music don't have anything to do with that culture. Our music (Cape Verde) is very defferent than portuguese music.
My brother, like Cabral said " its our duty to bring lights to those who still live in ignorence." our doors are always open, help our fellow brothers is what we here for...

I think they are both unique and inspiring artists. I am proud of calling them fellow Cape Verdeans. I've also wondered who is best but realized that in doing this I was only thrying to categorize something that should not be categorized which is musical expression. To both these artists, keep expressing yourselves and your talents. _________________ Give your best. Give the world the best you got and it may never be enough...Give the world your best anyway! |
