PAWTUCKET -Mario Rodrigues, a young Cape Verdean from Boston, once lived a harsh and violent life on the streets of Dorchester, but has recently turned his life around and now works for the Lewis D. Brown Peace Institute promoting peace and unity amongst the hard-to-reach youth of Boston. He took the stage at an event with hundreds of Cape Verdeans elders and community leaders tuned to his every word. And the word form him was "forgiveness."
"I would like to apologize to all of my elders for ruining the positive image of Cape Verdeans which they worked so hard to create," he said.
Rodrigues then vowed to work to restore that image. His words brought the crowd to their feet with a standing ovation. After all taking back the image of Cape Verdeans was what Saturday's event was all about. Cape Verdeans from Rhode Island and all over the country gathered at Pawtucket's Clube Social Português to honor David Soares, Albany County District Attorney and one of the most inspiring Cape Verdeans in the country on Saturday.

In recent years, violence and drugs have injured the image of Cape Verdeans in popular media and turned the focus away from our nearly two hundred years of continued achievement and success. Adriano Cabral, one of the first speakers at the event reminded all in attendance that, "...[the gala] is just the start of a process to bring up and highlight the greatness and success of the CV community to our people and the main stream society. United we are strong. There were no lack of role-models at the dinner. On the panel of speakers Soares was joined by a multitude of honorable individuals of all ages. Jorge Lima, first and former Cape Verdean State Representative in RI and member of the Tuskegee Airman; Larry Lopes, assistance chief of the probation office of New Bedford; Jose Fortes, former member of the New Bedford City council; Justin Fernandes, President of Kentura Magazine (www.kentura.com) the first ever Capeverdean world entertainment news publication; and several others.
At around 10 p.m. the dinner's honored guest, David Soares took to the microphone joined by one of his sisters, who helped Soares translate parts of his speech to Kriolu. Soares' words were articulate and moving. Humbly, he began by saying, "I am not worthy of the accolades I've received today, but I am thankful."
He then took time out to pay homage to Cape Verdean women stating, "it is the women of Cape Verde who make us who we are; our fathers left us for a better life, our mothers, sisters, and grandmothers built us."
Soares was born in Ponta Achada, Brava, but grew up in Pawtucket and attended Shea High School. Many of his childhood friends were in attendance and joined the crowd in applause as Soares explained, "Pawtucket is a launching pad for success; if you can survive Pawtucket, you can survive anywhere." Soares closed by saying, "There is no challenge you will ever face that is as tough as the challenges our parents faced to get us here. I will not dishonor my parents and our families sacrifice and allow our people to fail."
The gala kicked off at 6:00 PM with music from local band, Cabo Sounds, who were later joined on stage by singers Candida Rose & Gardenia Benros. Dinner was served at 8:00 and was provided by Campeon Food Services, a local catering service specializing in Cape Verdean and Portuguese cuisine.

Uma noite de palavras inspiradoras e de heróis

Mário Rodrigues, um jovem cabo-verdiano de Boston, viveu outrora uma vida dura e violenta nas ruas de Dorchester, mas recentemente deu uma reviravolta na sua vida e agora trabalha para o Lewis D. Brown Peace Institute promovendo a paz e unidade entre a juventude de Boston, à qual é tão difícil de chegar. Ele subiu ao palco num evento com centenas de pessoas pertencentes à comunidade cabo-verdiana atentas a cada uma das suas palavras. E a palavra-chave foi "perdão."
"Gostaria de pedir desculpas a todos os meus compatriotas mais velhos por destruir a imagem positiva dos cabo-verdianos pela qual eles lutaram tanto para criar," afirmou.
Rodrigues fez um juramento de lutar para restaurar essa imagem. As suas palavras fizeram a multidão levantar-se das suas cadeiras numa ovação. No fim de contas restaurar a imagem dos cabo-verdianos era o motivo do evento de sábado.
Cabo-verdianos de Rhode Island e de todas partes do país reuniram-se no Clube Social Português de Pawtucket, no sábado, para homenagear David Soares, procurador distrital do condado de Albany e um dos cabo-verdianos mais inspiradores do país.

Em anos recentes, a violência e as drogas prejudicaram a imagem dos cabo-verdianos nos meios de comunicação tirando o foco dos nossos quase 200 anos de feitos e sucessos contínuos. Adriano Cabral, um dos primeiros oradores do evento recordou todos os presentes de que, "...[a gala] é apenas o início do processo para apresentar e destacar a grandeza e sucesso da comunidade cabo-verdiana ao nosso povo e à sociedade dominante. Unidos somos fortes."
Modelos não faltaram no jantar. No painel de oradores, Soares estava acompanhado de um grande número de ilustres indivíduos de todas as idades. Jorge Lima, primeiro e antigo representante estatal cabo-verdiano de Rhode Island e membro dos Tuskegee Airman; Larry Lopes, chefe adjunto do gabinete de liberdade condicional de New Bedford; José Fortes, antigo membro do Conselho Municipal de New Bedford; Justin Fernandes, presidente da Kentyura Magazine (www.kentura.com) a primeira publicação mundial cabo-verdiana de espectáculos; entre muitos outros.
Por volta das 10 p.m., o convidado de honra do jantar, David Soares, pegou no microfone juntamente com uma das suas irmãs, que o ajudou a traduzir parte do seu discurso para crioulo. As palavras de Soares foram eloquentes e comovedoras. Modestamente, começou por dizer, "Não sou merecedor dos elogios que recebi hoje, mas estou muito agradecido."
E em seguida aproveitou a ocasião para prestar homenagem às mulheres cabo-verdianas, declarando: "São as mulheres de Cabo Verde que nos fazem o que nós somos; os nossos pais deixaram-nos em busca de uma vida melhor, as nossas mães, irmãs e avós criaram-nos."
Soares nasceu em Ponta Achada, na ilha de Brava, mas cresceu em Pawtucket e frequentou o Shea High School. Muitos dos seus amigos de infância estavam na assistência e juntaram-se à multidão de pessoas em aplauso enquanto Soares explicava, "Pawtucket é chave para o sucesso; se se conseguir sobreviver em Pawtucket, consegue-se sobreviver em qualquer lugar." Soares concluiu dizendo, "Não há desafio que se vá alguma enfrentar que seja tão duro como os desafios que os nossos pais enfrentaram para nos fazer chegar aqui. Não vou desonrar os meus pais e o sacrifício das nossas famílias e permitir que o nosso povo fracasse."
A gala teve início às 6 p.m. com música de uma banda local, Cabo Sounds, à qual se juntaram mais tarde as cantoras Cândida Rose & Gardénia Benros.
