Cape Verde beat heavely favorite Nigeria, 62-53, in the quarter final game of the African Basketball Championship, AFROBASKET2007. The game took place, tuesday, August 21, 2007, in Angola. In a David vs Golia fashion, Cabo Verde's national basketball team led by Manuel Trovoada, royally upset Nigeria, which is considered to be one of Africa's best. Cabo Verde will now move on to the semi-finals, facing either Angola or the Central African Republic. The said two teams will play each other tomorrow.
Furthermore, many a African basketball pundits bet on Nigeria beating Azidja(Cabo Verde) by a twenty (or more) point difference. That prediction failed to materialize. As a result, Cape Verde's national team has now gotten a competitive psychological boost that has compelled it to aspire to a place no lower than first, 2007 African Baskteball champions, that is. This without a doubt is a radical difference from the original goal of sixth place.
