Washington, June 28, 2007 - A divided Senate defeated the passage of Bush’s immigration bill to overhaul the nation’s immigration policy, a key issue of his agenda, yesterday. The proposal was rejected by 53 to 46 votes. That move killed the prospect of the bill moving to a final passage.
The bill strongly backed by senior Massachusetts Senator, Edward Kennedy, included a provision to give legal status to the nation’s 12 million undocumented immigrants and create a path to citizenship. On the other hand, it called for tougher border security and enforcement of immigration measures at workplace, along with an immediate infusion of $4.4 billion to cover those cost.
What’s your take on the Senate decision? Was the bill fair, unfair, or acceptable? Would it solve US’ immigration problem? Which directions is the immigration issue taking in this country?
