|
|
For about three months Cesaria's fans have been eagerly waiting for her concert with the debut of Tcheka in the United States. The wait ended last Saturday night when the two stars performed to a diverse audience of about 70 % Americans (from all different background) and 30% Cape Verdeans.
What did of think of the show? How was Tcheka's opening performance? Was Cesaria the same or did she offer a new flavor to her fans?
Please, leave your opinion. |

Cesaria was superb as usually but last Saturday my excitement was mostly for Tcheka's performance. I have seen Cesaria a couple of times but had never seen Tcheka live before. If I was to grade him, he’d get an A+ for exceeding the expectations. Truly, the guy not only has a great voice with an incredible versatility but is a genius on guitar.
Though he was just the show opener, I'd said that Tcheka got the crowd all work up and Cesaria was figuratively speaking that great Porto or Italian wine you want to enjoy after a great dinner. |

tcheka rocked...no two ways about it. the guy has great potential. i love cesaria and i love how she has put cv front and center on the world music scene. and her voice has probably made many a european curious about cape verde and for that i am always grateful. but objectively speaking, her voice is not what it used to be. how can it? she is in her late 60's, has done things that cannot help her voice such as smoking and drinking. i always recall her singing mar azul with an almost ethereal voice back in the 1990's but this past saturday, she (wisely) was not going to sing any tune that required her to hit the high notes. this is not a knock as all the great ones have their voice decline in their later years. for those of us old enough....ella fitzgerald's voice in the 1960's was not the same voice from the 50's and 60's. later in life, billie holidays voice had to be 'disguised' with violins in the background. and speaking of violins, the player in cesaria's group was obviously very green. he was okay on some songs, but to see him walk off the stage for 'angola' blew my mind. angola without violin is a naked tune. with that said....she is still better than 90% of the singers in the world. i guess i am spoiled because i remember he being better than 100%. she's still number one in my book. |
