Well, I'm pretty sure there are some Cape Vedeans out there who may look more caucasian than Vinny but they are not public figures. Vinny is the only CV public figure that I know of who looks semi-caucasian.
Now, as for Adam Clayton Powell, to me, he looks more middle eastern than european. If he were living today he'd probably be harassed everytime he tries to board an airplane, because aviation security officials would, more likely than not, mistake him for being an ay-rab

Kakau,
you are assuming that because I say I'm Black,
that I'm phenotypically as Black as the definition that
you have on the web. Again, you are looking at blackness
from superficial point of view when you say that Eminem could
be considered Black becuase he sings rap, wears the hip hop gear
and speaks slang. That is youth, urban and inner city culture. That
is not Black culture or a Black identity. You must go beyond the
superficial and beyond what you can SEE. My Black identity is
not based on my looks. I challenge you to read Cross (1999)
and Phinney (1995) and examine the psychological development
of an ethnic and racial identity. By the way, I have a friend who
is as white looking as Macedo and he identifies Black! Go figure!
By the way, to corroborate what my sister said, there are WOMEN
in Cape Verde as well.

I am African man from Africa. Any one who is using color to identify one self is caught up in the ignorance of racism and discrimination.
Black is not a culture,African is a culture and there are many cultures in Africa. To utilize hip hop or ebonic and slang and the racist language of the South Africa (apartheid) or USA metaphorical speech or idiomatic expressions to make structural changes to appease folk who are Negro or African American by true definition because of white power and white superiority that caucasion europeans/anglo americans (White) is absolutely an abstraction and it is absurd. I am being polite.

This obsession is not a reality of actuality. It is only a delusion in order to strike back at the stupidity of European Anglo who are racist.

To be African American that is correct, In terms of culture it has become African American because the African has brought his roots into many diversified other culture which makes up America both North & South America and the many Islands. That is the true culture, not the color of ones skin.
Why is it that we have such a problem in just saying we are Africans or African American. This problem persist mostly here in the USA
Wake up Mr.West If you want to call your self black or white or brown or blue or green etc suit yourself . Just remember when many millions of people were brought here as slaves and some did come as free men and woman. came from a particular country from a very special tribe and you spoke what ever language of the very special region you came from and that place was not called Black or White or Brown or Green.

It is the most asinine argument. Get back to your roots take a lesson from Brother Alex Haley. To call your self Black when you look white now that is superficial. "Return To The Source" Amilcar Cabral.

Some times when you are around some people who lack the understanding and the knowledge you go with the current until you can patiently teach them.

Every one now who comes from another country because they are dark skin must say they are Black and forget their roots. I don't think so.

In terms of psychological development of ethnic and racial identity;it was the brillance of the tricky Anglo European arch-deceiver who taught racial identity based on racism so that black would be the place so many folk would get stuck and never get back to Africa but thank God that is changing, and when the negro or colored or black man goes to Africa he comes back being an African from what ever country or tribe he or she comes from, we hope. And if you are not lucky enough like Alex Haley just say you are African and what ever complexsion or hue just be glad you are, and know you are beautiful from Black,Blue,Brown, red or yellow or white.

Are you aware of all the many looking white faces we have in Africa from the Bantu to Berber. That are not Europeans.

Racism is world wide we have it among so-called Arabs who have for many years been under the racist teachings of the Europeans. Sudan is a case in point. But we have to make a qualitative analysis to qualify all modification.

I will not reduce myself to the Eminem question. That is so ridiculous; just because Al Jolson painted his face black and sounded like a Negro (soul Brother)that did not make him an African or to make the crazy point, Blackman. Wake Up Mr.West. Don't Become Mr West. Be who you are a Caboverdiano with out making any excuses. Black/White or other wise; Cabo Verde sta nah costa de Africa.

Not everything has to be about race. We need to move beyond that. Consider this: Did you notice Deval Patrick making the race issue a central topic during his campaign? Had he done that he would never get close to win the election especially here in Mass where about 82% of the population is white. We should learn from him that if we want victories and success in America, we need to work and collaborate with all types of people no matter their racial background. Those that will always try to piggy bank on the race card, will go as far as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson has gone - not that I'm diminishing their great work around civil rights issues. But those who open they heart to people from all ethnic background and move ahead of the "it's because I'm black/ Cape Verdean" stigma - this doesn't mean that we ought to be blind to race relation challenges we face in this country -, will go as far as Deval Patrick and Barack Obama has gone so far and beyond.

I also posted this on the CV Celebrities section as it applies to both:

The administrator made a very good point. He only forgot to mention other strong black leaders such as the Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice and the former Secretary of State, Retired Four Star General, and Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff Colin Powell. These are the two black people that have actually gotten the closest to sitting in the corner office of the White House.

One more thing to Blame: Lets not blame the Globe and the Herald. Those two papers can only report what makes good news. Good News for Media is Bad News for people. The Media will disappear if the Bad News Disappears.

Someone wrote that puerto-ricans are more mixed than cape-verdeans, I will put an hold in this belief. I think that cape-verdeans are more mixed than puerto-ricans. The mix of the cape-verdeans and the cv is different.

the capeverdeans are a mix of mediteraneans and blacks. While the puerto ricans are a mix of mediteraneans-blacks and amerindians.

The capeverdeans on their origins have more euro-mediteranean origins than the puertoricans. The puertoricans have a lot of amerindiensin their origins. 30-40% amerindian, they are 20-30% black , and a 40-50% mediteraneans.

Cape-verdeans have almost no amerindian origins, and in average it is a 50% mediteranean, 50% black mix.

The more european look of the puerto-ricans compared to the cv is due to their amerindians origins rather than their larger amount of european blood...I am convinced that they have a less european origins than the mixed-race cv.

Someone writes that he added the photo of the "only white looking CV he knows." I know Vinny Macedo, and his entire family looks like him. That's at least 9 people. I know at least 300 more that look like Vinny. You can't wish them away...they exist. I'm sure there are hundreds more, but until we recognize that we do have white Cape Verdeans, they will never identify as Cape Verdeans because just as the Black Cape Verdean finds it difficult to live in a white world, the white Cape Verdean has the same problem living in a black world. The sad part of all of this is that they all want to be Cape Verdeans, but America has dictated how we will behave in a nation that is extremely concious of color. So those who look black live in the black world and those who look white live in the white world.

there is a lot of people of cv-origins who are whites (especially in Portugal) and the difference between them and the mixed race cv is that they are not challenged when the claim to be portuguese. when the white cv claim to be portuguese nobody challenges them. I think that there is several thousand white-cv who live in Portugal and are perceived as portuguese. I also think that we are lucky to have them because generally the white cv are very educated and belong to the portuguese intelligensia.

The white-cv based in portugal are lobbying the EU to allow cv to have a little place inside the EU. It is a tough task and I wish them all the success alongside the cv governement in this task

Are you advocating segregation from the 60': "separated but equals"? What are you? Out of your mind? Rolling Eyes

America and Cape Verdeans in this country have moved far ahead of that and we surely don't want to go back to that painful period especially for black people. We'd rather be a melting pot/mosaic country that we are now.

So to your proposal I say, "thanks, but no thanks!"

Vinny Macedo is not white by American standards. He has a slightly broad nose which I'm pretty sure he inherited from his African ancestors. And the fact that one of his daughters looks visibly black is another indication that he has recent "mandiga" blood in him.

On a different note, this post does not contradict in any way, the "cabo verde: the cradle of the african diaspora" post. All I'm doing is describing the different terms that are used to describe phenotypes in Cabo Verde and the United States.
Now, to address your point about blackness having to do with political and ideological identities, I would say that in this regard, then, Cape Verdeans would not be black, because very few of them have the political and ideological framework that would be classified as black, afrocentric and whatnot.
In fact, I would venture to say that the afrocentric (read: black) framework of thinking is arguably unique to African Americans. I can't think of anywhere else in the African diaspora, where there's an equal level of political consciousness and/or yearning for an all Black nation.[/quote]

The "one drop rule" was actually created in America during slavery. It was designed to "widen" the slave pool when slavery was coming to an end, and also to protect the wives and children of the white slave owners from losing property rights to the children that the slave owner had with his slaves. The rule is now used universally, but has no scientific credibility. The U.S Government Offce of Management and Budget prefaces most statistical issues involving race by stating that there is no scientific basis for their classifications other than for information gathering.

Genética "separa" Barlavento e Sotavento

11-01-07

Windward and Leeward islands “separated” by genetics

11-01-07
The population of Cape Verde’s Windward islands is more similar to that of Europe than the population of the Leeward islands, according to an investigation carried out by the Population Genetics Laboratory at the University of Madeira, Portugal.

The study, which was coordinated by Hélder Spínola, has been analyzing the genetic patterns of the world’s Portuguese-speaking countries since 1999. In Cape Verde, the study involved a total of 120 people.

The inhabitants of the Windward islands have a higher number of haplotypes (the genetic makeup of a chromosome) in common with Portugal, which can be explained by the differences in the settlement patterns between the Windward islands and the Leeward islands further south.

The study also affirms that Cape Verde’s genetic base, with a high number of allele (equal forms of the same gene), is the result of a mixture of various African peoples and Caucasians from Europe.

Cape Verdeans, in comparison with other peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa, are much closer to North Africans, sharing allele frequently found in the Portuguese population, as well as DNA markers characteristic of the peoples in the Mediterranean basin.

The study also affirms that there is some similarity between the populations of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde, although Cape Verdeans have more haplotypes in common with Portugal than do Guineans.

The investigation also represents a contribution to the study of the diseases that plague the peoples of Portuguese-speaking countries. The data provide a view to the greater or lesser degree of relations between the genetic makeup of a given population and the incidence of illnesses such as allergies, arthritis and type 1 diabetes.

Who funded or requested that studied? The Portuguese government that has a vested interested in Cape Verde being identified with Portugal due to benefits and other interests it can get from that in the European Union?

Who did the studied? A Portuguese scientist trying to prove his theory? And what's his agenda behind that theory? That is, now, what's next?

The people of Cape Verde should ask the hard questions before accepting that study as a credible, impartial, and independent scientific project.

Just throwing my two cents.

according to this study,

95% of the matrilineal lineage of the capeverdeans is african.

But unexpectedly, 75% of capeverdean patrilineal lineage is white (portuguese caucasians + portuguese jews).

It has also been found that barlavento has a genetic background closer to the portuguese than the sotavento.

The study was conducted poorly. 120 people is a small sample. The problem with Cape Verdeans is there is a divide of who we really are. Too many people on both sides of the argument are trying to sell us out to what we are. Generally, older folk say we are European and younger folk claim we are African. Both are wrong. We are Cape Verdean.

social scientist,

I agree with you when uyou tel that "older folks say we are portuguese and younger folk say we are african". This happened to me, when I was a teenager and very influencable. I was pressured by non-cv people to identify with africans, and as a lot of teenagers I was influencable and I tried to fit these expectations. But as I got older I started to understand better myself and my culture, and know I am convinced that I am culturally european and I don't listen to external pressure trying to force me to identify with africans.

Concerning the study, it uses the same criteria that anyother study and will be used to study diabete on capeverde. It has been made by the macaronesian university. The article has been published by asemana.cv which is used for the paicv propaganda.
